Ex Pupils Join Us For Our 50th Anniversary Celebrations

Thursday, 1st October, 2009

On Friday 25th September we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the opening of Stradbroke Modern School. During the day pupils were given a glimpse of what the school would have been like in September 1959. Lessons involved PT with the RAF putting them through their paces, Country Dancing, Knitting, Arithmetic and learning times tables!

The pupils really enjoyed it. It was a great deal of fun but it had a serious side in understanding how times have changed and moved on. The first Geography teacher Mr Dodds toured the school during the day and met pupils and staff. The local newspapers came along to interview pupils and take photos, so we look forward to seeing their articles and pictures.

On the evening we were joined by 110 ex-pupils, many of whom were here on the first day that Stradbroke Modern School opened - 9th September1959! Also present was Mr Leegood the first PE teacher. After a few short speeches they toured the school with Year 10 and Year 11 pupils and then enjoyed a glass of wine and a piece of special ‘Anniversary Cake ‘, whilst reminiscing about how it was in 1959! Many ex-pupils wore their old school ties and brought old photos to add to our exhibition of memorabilia.
