News From The Library And North Suffolk Skills Centre

Tuesday, 20th October, 2009

This week is Book Week and we have lots of new fiction on display in the library. Mrs Algar is starting a reading group with 7B and Mrs Samkin is involving 8A in reviewing the new books and creating a review booklet, as well as posting a selection of reviews on the School’s website.

Paired and Breakfast Reading Clubs are both starting on a Tuesday morning in extended tutor time. This gives Year 11 monitors a clear 20 – 30 minutes to listen to weaker readers and help boost their confidence and ability.

In September, thirteen Year 10 pupils started courses at the North Suffolk Skills Centre – 4 mechanics, 7 builders, 1 hairdresser, I engineer and 1 caterer. They have settled in well and their first report is being written at the moment. The pupils on the Building and Construction course will receive a report at the end of each unit (5 reports in total) so that parents can see how they are performing across the wide field of new skills they are learning. The Year 11 pupils have started on their second year, with 3 builders moving on to the BTEC level course.

The 4 mechanics – Luke Curtis, Tristan Rumsby, Nick Eaves and Ryan Goldsmith have all passed their engines exam and now regularly work on my car – cleaning it, changing the oil and replacing the front disc brakes and pads. They are working with increasing independence, problem solving and making decisions.

The Open Evening, held at the NSSC recently, gave parents and pupils, particularly in Year 9, the opportunity to have a look at the wonderful facilities on offer. Mrs Samkin is at the centre for 2 days a week supporting all the pupils. Meanwhile, her library post is ably filled by Mrs Algar, the Literacy Support Assistant.
