The Salter Festival Of Chemistry

Friday, 21st May, 2010

Sarah, Jacob, Josh and I were chosen to take part in a Science Day in Norwich at the U.E.A. First of all there was a little introduction of what the day would be like and what we would be doing. Then we were told that in the first experiment we would be investigating the death of Captain Salter. We got our lab jackets, gloves and our goggles on. After that, we did two tests to see who the main suspect for his murder was. We found out that it was the cook. We did a salt test and then an ink test and both results pointed to her. It was really fun trying to figure out who the murderer was.

Next, we had lunch and we got to sit outside with all of the college students. That was quite cool too.

Next, we had our second test which was about creating an iodine clock. We got two formulas and had to mix them together to create a solution that within a minute would stay clear, but then when it got to a minute would turn a blacky-blue colour. Our final iodine clock took fifty five seconds to turn a blacky-blue colour.

Finally, we went and watched The Chemistry Magic Show. (I wasn’t too sure about this at first. I thought that it was going to be like a little kids’ magic show but I was so wrong!!! It was really good, maybe even the best bit of the day!)

All of the tricks and experiments they did were so amazing; I was speechless (which doesn’t happen very often!) There were lots of pops and bangs which made it even better.

I had such a great time there; I think all of us did. We even got a couple of free gifts: a pen and a frisbee.
