English

The English Department at Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College is proud of both the high standards it sets for pupils and the outstanding results they go on to achieve in national tests. We fully support the statement from the 2007 National Curriculum document that 'English is vital for communicating with others in college and in the wider world, and is fundamental to learning in all curriculum subjects. In studying English, pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing that they will need to participate in society and employment'. This set of core values is at the heart of the English curriculum we deliver here at Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College.

Pupils study a broad and balanced curriculum that includes: fiction and non-fiction texts; media and ICT texts; as well as experiencing speaking and writing in a variety of forms and in different contexts. Pupils are assessed regularly and given thorough feedback to help them make progress. Self and peer assessment in the department was praised in our recent Ofsted Inspection.

As a department we also recognise the importance of extra-curricular activities and seek to enrich the curriculum with trips where possible. In Year 9, we take pupils to London for a day with a visit to the Tate Modern and a performance of a play in Covent Garden. On other occasions, pupils have been invited to attend the Norwich Theatre Royal to see performances or the GCSE 'Poetry Live'event which deals with set poetry presented by the poets themsleves. We have also developed a successful link with two local professional actors who have worked with pupils in both Year 7 and Year 9. Past experiences also include work with local journalists.

Pupils' achievement and enjoyment are at the heart of all that we do and we strive to ensure that all pupils achieve their personal best as shown in our 2009 GCSE results - 80% of pupils gained their English GCSE and 73% gained the Literature GCSE.
